"I really like the way hes into the game on the bench, hes finishing checks, hes engaged in what hes doing," Paul Maurice said Thursday as the Jets prepared to host the Vancouver Canucks. "He doesnt at all look like a player whos waiting for this experiment not to work and Im going to go back to where I want to. " Moving Byfuglien to the wing was one of former coach Claude Noels last acts as he tried to reverse a five-game slide that ultimately cost him his job. Maurice left Byfuglien there and suggests its working so well its not even something he thinks about. "Hes put up big numbers, scored overtime goals, done the things, so hes impactful in our game," Maurice said. The Chicago Blackhawks also tried Byfuglien at forward, although he has made it no secret that he prefers defence. He hasnt quit cold turkey and still covers the blue-line when the Jets have a power play and Byfuglien is still the third-highest scoring defenceman in the league with 40 points. When Winnipegs power play works (which isnt often, ranking 24th in the NHL) its usually Byfuglien whos partly responsible. He has a team-leading 19 power-play points. While forward might not be his first choice, he says its his job to do what hes asked to help the Jets win. "I dont know if Im really comfortable yet but getting there," he said after practice Thursday. "Playing with the same line helps and getting to know where they go, its better." He plays right wing on what is nominally the teams third line with Olli Jokinen in the middle and Devin Setoguchi on the left side. It has largely done what Noel hoped to accomplish, given the Jets three legitimate scoring lines that opposition teams have to be concerned about. Byfuglien has had six points in the nine games since the change, more than his linemates combined. The shift has meant rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba, just 19, is now getting a lot of ice time and defence partner Mark Stuart has nothing but praise for the way hes handled himself. "Hes a kid whos got tremendous skill and hes going to be such a good player in the league, he already is," said the veteran, whose own play seems to have taken off lately. Stuart had points in each of the teams last two games and is seeing almost as much ice time as Trouba. "I think we complement each other," he said. "Hes such a good skater, he plays with the puck really well, he loves skating it up. "Im more of a stay back (defenceman) a lot more, I think defence first." Trouba has seven points over the last seven games and has moved into 14th spot on the rookie scoring list, despite having played only 38 games this season due to injuries. After losing 4-3 to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, the Jets host Western Conference rival Vancouver on Friday night at the MTS Centre. January hasnt been kind to the slumping Canucks, who have won just four of the 14 games theyve played this month. Theyll arrive here having lost two straight to Edmonton and Chicago. But theyre still clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference. The Jets were 12th going into Fridays game and need to gain a lot of ground if they hope to avoid missing the post-season once again. WINNIPEG -- Dustin Byfuglien may have to scratch for things he likes about playing forward but his coach is certainly sold on the way the former Winnipeg Jets defenceman is performing when hes on the ice. But now he has shifted his focus back to the Pittsburgh Penguins and looks to get his first-place team to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs. "I dont think you get rid of the disappointment," Bylsma said Tuesday. "But you have to put it behind you. The task at hand is coming back here and playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and I think thats the best way to put it behind you." The U.S. nearly knocked off Team Canada in Vancouver in 2010, falling just short of a gold medal and instead settled for silver. The Americans wanted to win an elusive Olympic hockey gold for the first time since the "Miracle on Ice," in 1980, and U.S. executives felt Bylsmas team had the right blend of skill, speed, and grit to get the job done. The U.S. offence got off to a strong start through the first four games of the tournament, outscoring the opposition 20-6. Included was the exhilarating, 3-2, eight-round shootout victory against the host Russians, one of the most memorable games of the tournament. "The Russian game was as unique of a game as Ive ever coached," Bylsma said. "The stage in terms of the tournament doesnt mean a whole lot because everyones going to play a fourth game, but trying to compare it to a Stanley Cup or a Game 7 was completely different. It had a different feel." The U.S. cruised past the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals, setting up a semifinal showdown with Canada. "Its a game we all wanted," Bylsma said. "Maybe the biggest disappointment is that it wasnt the gold medal game." Regardless, the U.S. had to get through Canada to win gold, and for the second straight time in Olympic competition, the Canadians topped the U.S. Canada, which went on to win its second straight gold medal, blanked the Americans in a suffocating 1-0 effort that wasnt as close as the final score. Bylsma was criticized after the loss, some drawing comparisons to the Boston Bruins foour-game sweep of a punchless Penguins team, which had trouble scoring during the 2013 Eastern Conference finals.dddddddddddd "You can draw the comparisons, but I dont know if theyre valid or applicable," Bylsma said. "The one thing we would like to go back to in that game was playing faster and playing quicker, allowing us to be on the forecheck in a better manner." Penguins GM Ray Shero, also the associate general manager for Team USA, credited Team Canada. "That might be the greatest Olympic hockey team ever," Shero said. "You can look at how we wanted to play, but sometimes the opponent doesnt let you get to your game." The Canadians, who never trailed in the tournament, flexed their defensive muscle, allowing just three goals in six games to become the first team in 30 years to go unbeaten through an Olympic tournament. "Canada was very good," Shero said. "We came in with high expectations and theres nothing wrong with setting a high goal." Both wanted to see a different outcome after a humiliating 5-0 defeat the following day against Finland in the bronze medal game. "The bronze medal game was a tough one for us to rebound and get to," Bylsma said. "Thats the biggest disappointment of the tournament." But now the attention shifts back to Bylsmas Penguins where Olympians Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz are back with gold medals from Team Canada, while Jussi Jokinen and Olli Maatta earned bronze with Finland. Bylsma returned empty-handed along with U.S. Olympians Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin, who broke his hand in the quarterfinal round and is out four to six weeks. Russian star Evgeni Malkin is also without a medal, motivation that Bylsma hopes will further fuel a deep playoff run for the Metropolitan Division-leading Penguins. The Penguins return to action when they host Montreal on Thursday. "We have 24 games to get back and focus on this team being the best it can be, getting to the Stanley Cup and winning it," Bylsma said. cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '

CLEVELAND -- As they debate what to do with the No. 1 draft pick, the Cavaliers made a significant first move in their coaching search. The team interviewed Chicago Bulls assistant coach Adrian Griffin for its coaching vacancy Tuesday, two people with knowledge of the meeting told the Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the situation. Griffin is believed to be the first candidate to formally interview with the Cavs, who are looking for their third coach in three years after owner Dan Gilbert fired Mike Brown last month for the second time in four years. And while the team was meeting with Griffin, Florida coach Billy Donovan, who has reportedly been contacted by the Cavs, wouldnt promise he will return for another season in Gainesville. "I think when you start making guarantees about life and start making guarantees about where youre going to be, thats not good because if for some reason I ever change my mind and did something, I wouldnt want (people) saying, Well, he promised, he guaranteed, he said this on record," Donovan said at the Southeastern Conferences annual spring meetings. "I just think when you start doing that, thats a mistake." The 39-year-old Griffin wasnt drafted out of college, but he played for five teams during nine seasons in the NBA. He has been on Tom Thibodeaus staff in Chicago since 2010. He also worked under former Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles. Griffins background working with the defensive-minded Thibodeau and Skiles, and playing under Jeff Van Gundy and Don Nelson makes him an attractive choice to Gilbert, who believes defence wins championships. New Cavs general manager David Griffin has said he wants to find a coach with "the defensive background thats dyed in the wool of this franchise" and one with offensive openness. The Cavs, who defied long odds to win the NBA draft lottery last week, are not commenting during their coaching search. Soon after Brown was let go following a disappointing 33-49 season, Griffin was one of the first candidates to be linked to Clevelands opening. He has a good rapport with players, and can identify with life as a pro after being bounced around the league and playing in Europe. Griffin has been pursuing his doctorate in leadership studies while working as an assistant. Last week, a person familiar with the Cavaliers plans told the AP the club plans to interview Los Angeles Clippers assistant Alvin Gentry this week. He previously worked in Phoenix with David Griffin. The Cavs are also reportedly interested in meeting with Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue, and intend to interview former Memphis coach Lionel Hollins later this week. David Griffin recently said the Cavs would not limit themselves during the search and would consider coaches without any NBA experience. One of them could be Donovan, who said last week he has been approached by "several teams." On Tuesday, the Gators coach said hes committed to the school -- he signed a three-year extension in February -- but didnt rule out the chance to jump to the pros at some point. Donovan accepted Orlandos job in 2007 but changed his mind and returned to Florida six days later. While Donovan made it clear hes comfortable at the school, hes leaving his options open for the future. "All I can say is I love Florida, Im happy here ... the schools been great to me," he said. "But at the same point, some of the NBA stuff, as Ive said before, is intriguing in a lot of ways -- the basketball part of it. Thats not to say that Im unhappy here; thats not the case at all. "But when people start getting into forecasting where theyre going to be or what theyre going to do, and Ive seen a lot of coaches over the years come out and say, No, no, no, no, Im not going anywhere, Im not going anywhere, and then all of a sudden they go somewhere and its like, Well, this guy is a complete liar. I dont want to get into that situation. Theres been some teams that have called, but thats really it." David Ortiz Jersey . Amibroker Help / in the seventh on Mike

Quarterback Travis Lulay starts his first game of the season tonight when the B.C. Lions visit the Ottawa Redblacks, almost a full year after injuring his throwing shoulder last September. Watch the game live on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5 and on TSN GO tonight at 7pm et/4pm pt. You can also listen to the game on TEAM 1040 in Vancouver and TSN Radio 1200 in Ottawa. It was hoped Lulay would be healthy in time for training camp after undergoing off-season surgery, but he instead takes charge nine games into a campaign that has seen the Lions wobble to 5-4 record in the CFLs ultra-competitive West Division. "Im excited. This is why you play the game - to have an opportunity to play," Lulay said this week. "I dont take a minute of it for granted. If I learned anything during (the last year), it was that I feel fortunate to be able to do what I do. I just love being out here with the guys." Lulay said going on the six-game injured list at the start of the regular season gave him a chance to refocus, and it was towards the end of that period when he finally started to feel like he was getting back to normal. "I knew it was a process ... I didnt know exactly when that process would come to an end," he said. "I do feel confident in my ability to play well. "There was so much unknown going into (training) camp, knowing there was a chance that I may be ready early (and) knowing there was a chance it might take a while into the season." Lulay has dressed the last three games as a backup -- seeing action late in the last two -- and with the team coming off a bye week, head coach Mike Benevides felt the time was right for the 30-year-old to take over from Kevin Glenn. "Hes as good as Ive seen him in a long, long time ... a long, long time," Benevides said of Lulay. "Hes not going to be as smooth as he wants to be a month from now, but he looks as good as Ive seen in a long time." Lulays return comes at a critical juncture for B.C., which has been consistently inconsistent so far in 2014. The Lions have road victories over the Calgary Stampeders (8-1) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-2), but are an uncharacteristic 2-3 at home. Giving the Lions a much-needed boost in a variety of areas is Stefan Logan, who is leading the league with 1,264 combined yards, the only player in the CFL with more than 1,000 yards in that department. Defensively, the Lions are still paced by Solomon Elimimian who, despite leaving early a couple weeks ago, still paces the league in tackles with 74, 26 more than Ottawas Jasper Simmons who is second on the list. Elimimian practiced on Wednesday and will start tonight. The Redblacks, all alone in last place in the dismal East Division where not one of the four inhabitants has even a .500 record, have just one win in nine tries to this point and that came by only a single point against visiting Toronto back on July 18 (18-17). Since then it has been a downhill run for Ottawa, losing most recently to a woeful Montreal group on the road in Week 10, 20-10. In that game, the Redblacks actually scored the first points of the contest, a 30-yard field goal by Brett Maher, but from there the team was held scoreless until the final frame when Henry Burris hooked up with Wallace Miles on a 28- yard TD pass play. Burris, who recently moved up the CFLs all-time passing list, finished the contest 21-of-34 for 245 yards, shaking off three sacks along the way. The signal caller was one of two players credited with rushing attempts for the Redblacks as he posted eight runs for 29 yards, two less than Chevon Walker who carried the ball seven times. Miles managed to pull down seven passes for a 101 yards, but even that effort was not enough to offset a staggering 16 penalties for a loss of 135 yards in the outing. The Redblacks continue to bring up the rear in terms of scoring this season with only 15.1 ppg, the team generating just 294.6 ypg which is second-lowest in the CFL after 10 weeks of action. On the defensive side of the ball, there is no team as lenient as Ottawa, with the squad giving up a hefty 412.8 ypg, close to 80 ypg more than the closest competitor (Montreal). As far as an all-time series is concerned, British Columbia is on top by a count of 39-18-2, taking into consideration only regular-season meetings dating back to 1961. The most recent matchup between the Lions and a team representing the city of Ottawa was back on Sept. 8, 2005 when BC hammered the opposition, 61-27, on the road. The Lions, who are set to host Ottawa on Oct. 11, have won nine consecutive meetings and 14 of the last 15 overall. Astros Will Harris Jersey . The Broncos quarterback earned the offensive award Wednesday after passing for 374 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-21 win over the Raiders Monday night. Manning completed 32-of-37 passes and had a passer rating of 135. Astros Gerrit Cole Jersey . The midfielder had an operation on Saturday, and is set to miss seven Premier League games, the third round of the FA Cup and the semifinals of the League Cup. http://www.cheapastrosjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=astros-ryan-pressly-jersey. PETERSBURG, Fla. Astros Andy Pettitte Jersey .  Seriously. Seven years of losing has brought many different faces, players and management, to the annual pre-season get-to-know-the-team round up. Astros Myles Straw Jersey . Last years runner-up, Sara Errani, also reached the last eight in straight sets. Flipkens converted all four of her break points against Meusburger, and the third-seeded Errani broke Karin Knapps serve five times to win their all-Italian match 6-4, 6-3. SEATTLE -- On a night when starter Jered Weaver struggled at times, the Los Angeles Angels were more concerned about a reliever who only faced one batter. Weaver gave up three runs over six innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. It was Weavers fifth win in six starts, although the first time in eight outings he allowed more than two runs. The bigger moment of concern came when Weaver left the game. Reliever Sean Burnett, who had come off the disabled list on Friday after recovering from elbow surgery last August, left the game after getting Michael Saunders to pop out leading off the seventh inning. "He just felt something in his elbow," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We dont know exactly what, hell be going back down to Southern California (Wednesday) to be evaluated. It looks like disabled list, but well see whats going on." This was Burnetts third appearance since returning, all of them lasting just one batter. Friday marked the first time he had pitched in the major leagues since May 26, 2013. After the game Burnett managed to answer just one question before breaking down and saying he couldnt continue. "Its just a lot of frustration right now. Im trying to stay positive and well see what the doctors say tomorrow," he said. Burnetts injury marred Los Angeles second win in seven tries against the Mariners this season. C.J. Cron led the Angels with a solo home run and run-scoring double, one of four doubles Los Angeles hit in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Cron led off the seventh inning with his third homer since making his major league debut on May 3. Weaver (6-3) said he felt the day would be a struggle from the time he started warming up before the game and didnt have the command hes been used to in recent starts. "I felt all right for the most part, but I didnt feel as crisp as I had the previous starts," he said. "Its one of those games where you had to battle, and these guys put up three early runs and helped me out a little bit early, and we were able to tack on some late." After the offence gave Weaver thee three-run lead in the top of the second, Seattle answered in the bottom of the inning when Dustin Ackley doubled and scored on Nick Franklins single.ddddddddddddHowever, even as Weaver struggled, the Mariners were unable to really take advantage. "This guy is a proven winner. He knows what hes doing out there and is pretty crafty," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "We battled all night with him." The Angels loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but only managed one run with Grant Green scoring as Howie Kendrick grounded into a double play. The Mariners also loaded the bases for a run in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Smoak led off the inning with his seventh home run before the Mariners loaded the bases with two outs. Weavers first pitch to James Jones sailed over the head of catcher Chris Iannetta and Ackley scored from third on the wild pitch to cut Los Angeles lead to 4-3. The Angels added another run in the seventh on Mike Trouts sacrifice fly. Roenis Elias (3-4) allowed five runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. The five earned runs were the most the Mariners rookie has allowed in his 11 career starts. "I just went out and did everything I normally do and it didnt work out today," Elias said through a translator. Ernesto Frieri pitched the ninth for his seventh save, but the Mariners made it interesting. Robinson Cano hit a two-out run scoring single, and Smoak walked before Kyle Seager ended the game with a deep fly to left-centre field. NOTES: Before the game Scioscia said LHP Wade LeBlanc would start Thursdays series finale, but after the game Scioscia said Burnetts injury may change those plans. "Well evaluate some things tonight and see which way it will go," he said. ... Cano was the DH Tuesday after getting spiked on a play Monday. ... Seattle LHP James Paxton, on the DL since April 9, had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed inflammation in his left shoulder. Paxton had a rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday but will be shut down until the inflammation subsides, which the club estimated would be five to seven days. cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn says Gareth Southgate is a strong candidate for the England manager’s job but no decision over an appointment will be made quickly. Southgates four-game stint in interim charge of the national team came to an end on Tuesday night when two late goals denied his side victory in a friendly against Spain. Six months half price Upgrade to Sky Sports to watch Man Utd v Arsenal on Saturday and get the first six months half price The 2-2 draw at Wembley meant two wins and two draws for Southgate since he took over from Sam Allardyce in the wake of his resignation after only 67 days. Glenn is pleased with the work the England U21 manager has done with the senior side, and says it has probably improved his chances, but says the FA must go through a proper recruitment process before making their decision. Englands players celebrate Jamie Vardy putting them 2-0 up against Spain We said all along that Gareth, if he wanted the job, is clearly going to be considered as a strong candidate, said Glenn, who will be responsible for the appointment along with FA chairman Greg Clarke and technical director Dan Ashworth. Adrian Bevington believes Gareth Southgate has earned the right to be made national manager on a permanent basis We know him and weve seen him at close quarters for a couple of years so it helps that he understands how international football works. What we said however is that we need to take stock after the four games. There is quite a long gap between now and the next England game in March, so weve got time. We will ask Gareth to review in detail the last four games and give him a bit of time to do that because that is part of the process. Gary Neville says there is no need for an FA panel to choose the next England manager as Gareth Southgate should be given the job on a permanent basis We will take a bit of time to reflect, but hopefully not too long. Its important that we build the right platform for success in the future. We just need to weigh up all the facts and take the time to make the right decision.I wont be drawn on leading candidates but Gareth is a really strong candidate and clearly after the last four games his candidacy has become much stronger. Not just based on one or two matches, but because of what weve seen over the last couple of years. New QPR manager Ian Holloway doesnt hold back when hes asked about the England managers job Hes got renewed confidence and is a different manager to what he was two years ago. So it is not all about assessing him on a few games, you have got to see it more in the round.Upgrade to Sky Sports now to watch Man Utd v Arsenal this Saturday and get the first six months half price! HOYLAKE, England -- Jordan Spieth was so caught up in the debate he never realized he might have been talking about himself. The topic was college football. Three days into the new year, Spieth was getting ready to play a practice round at Kapalua when he walked into a conversation about Oklahomas upset win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. A caddie was blaming Nick Saban for being so critical of the Crimson Tide leading up to the game that it rattled his players. Spieth, a football junkie and sideline guest during the Oklahoma-Texas game, shook his head. "Listen you guys, 20-year-olds dont get rattled by (anything) -- trust me on that one," he said before walking away. Two people left behind at the coffee machine stared at each other for a moment, wondering if the kid knew what he had just said. Spieth is 20. He gets angry at some of the shots he plays. He talks to himself so much on the golf course that he provides his own colour commentary. But rattled? Not over a bunker shot on the final hole at the John Deere Classic that he made for birdie to get into a playoff for his first PGA Tour victory. Not in a final-round pairing with Phil Mickelson, when he shot 62 in a performance so impressive that Mickelson told Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples, "Dude, youve got to pick this guy." Spieth wasnt rattled as the youngest American to play in the Presidents Cup, either. During a team match against Tiger Woods in a practice round, he won the 12th hole by making a hole-in-one. And he didnt look fazed when he shot 64 and nearly won the FedEx Cup, two months after getting his PGA Tour card. He became the first player since another 20-year-old -- Woods -- to start a season without status and reach the Tour Championship. Spieth is not the next Tiger Woods. But he sure got Woods attention. "For a person to have come out of college and done this well, this fast and been as consistent ... normally when youre young, you come out and you may have two, three good weeks a year, maybe more," Woods said. "It just seems like hes having one every week. Hes always up there." Spieth, who wont turn 21 until a week after the British Open, is among the favourites at Royal Liverpool. Even though the John Deere Classic remains his only victory, his body of work cant be ignored. Spieth is No. 10 in the world, and only Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy cracked the top 10 at a younger age. He shared the 54-hole lead at the Masters and The Players Championship, losing out to Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer. Dating to his victory, he has finished out of the top 20 only six times in 28 tournaments. All this in the blur of one year. "It feels like time flies," Spieth said. "But if you look back, even Kapalua feels like a long time ago. It feels like Ive been on tour for four years now." He plays much older than his age. Two weeks ago at Congressional, Spieth was in the same group as Woods when golfs biggest star returned from back surgery. Spieth had no idea where the ball was going. He was in much worse shape than Woods off the tee, but he put on a clinic with his short game. Woods missed the cut. Spieth tied for 11th. "Hes got an old head on young shoulders," Ernie Els said. "I know you guys have heard that a million times, too, but in his case, he understands the game at a young age. Hes cocky enough that he knows hes good. But he doesnt think that he knows everything. Hes ready to learn still." Cameron McCormick can attest to that. The golf instructor at Brook Hollow in Dallas first met Spieth when he was 12. They were playing nine holes when McCormick wanted to see more of his short game. Over the last six holes, he placed three balls around the green. It would be a par 2 from each spot, and McCormick told Spieth he would buy him a hat if he was 3 over. On the last hole, Spieth needed to hole one shot and get up and down on the other two. Spieth holed two of the shots. He got the hat. The teacher is not surprised by Spieths rapid ascent. He attributed it to not getting a big head and not being afraid to work. Even after his amazing year on the PGA Tour, Spieth and McCormick pored over statistics, identified areas to improve and got after it. "Hes the last person I have to ask to do more," McCormick said. "Jordan tries really hard to play his best golf regardless of whether the game is there that day." The only thing lacking are the wins, though he at least is giving himself chances. Remember, Garcia still only had one victory when he was 20. McIlroy collected his second victory the day before he turned 21. Spieth has time on his side -- lots of it -- even if feels as though time flies. Hes not about to get rattled. Authentic Omari Spellman Jersey . The 29-year-old German, the 2011 overall World Cup champion, says she has decided "to end my career now. This past Saturday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York, 20 year old Kevin Ward Jr. was killed after he was struck on the track by NASCAR star Tony Stewarts car. During the race, Wards car was spun out by Stewart. Ward then unbuckled, climbed out of his car and walked onto the track to express his displeasure to Stewart. At that point, he was struck by Stewarts car and killed. "I want to make it very clear: there are no criminal charges pending at this time" said Ontario County Sheriff Philp Povero after the incident. While that may be the case, this is far from over. Stewart faces the spectre of criminal charges and civil liability. For Stewart, this is going to be a long road. Criminal Charges On the criminal side, expect the District Attorney to take a very close look to determine whether Stewart committed a crime. The most likely charge that would be considered is second degree manslaughter. Also called involuntary manslaughter, this occurs when a person "recklessly" causes the death of another person. Reckless acts are generally deemed less serious or blameworthy than intentional acts. Second degree manslaughter can be distinguished from first degree manslaughter. With respect to the latter charge, a defendant may not have intended to kill the victim, but did intend to seriously physically injure the person and death resulted. At this point, there is insufficient evidence to determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. The evidence will be reviewed, including the video of the incident, witness statements and any data available from Stewarts car. Some witnesses have said that Stewart hit his throttle as he approached Ward. When you hit the throttle, the back end of the car kicks out. One theory is that Stewart may have hit the throttle to scare Ward. If Stewart intended to intimidate Ward by kicking his car out, or was otherwise reckless, he could be charged with manslaughter.dddddddddddd Should it be determined that Stewart intended to kill Ward, then the charge could be elevated to murder or manslaughter in the first degree. However, intent in this case would be very difficult to ascertain, and accordingly, these charges seem unlikely to materialize. So the key question for the DA is this: did Stewart intentionally hit his throttle to merely put a scare in Ward? If so, Stewart is suddenly responsible for the death of Ward in the likely form of Man 2. Civil Lawsuit Apart from criminal charges, Stewart may also face a wrongful death civil lawsuit (for money) from Wards family. If a person is killed as a result of the negligence or misconduct of another person, the surviving members may sue for "wrongful death". While it is early and we dont have all the information, it would not be a surprise to see Wards family sue Stewart. It is not unusual for families to seek a certain level of accountability by way of a civil suit. The family may also argue that Stewart has a reputation for having a bad temper, and this incident is consistent with his temperament. Stewart would argue that Ward should not have exited his vehicle. By doing so, he put himself in harms way. As well, Stewart may say that he tried to avoid Ward rather than scare him. Finally, Ward was wearing black on a part of the track that was not well lit. As a result, Stewart may say he didnt see Ward until it was too late. The investigation is still at an early stage and it is premature to declare that Stewart is responsible for Wards death. We should allow the investigation to run its course, at which point a clearer determination can be made as to liability. cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The road to the Masters got off to a bumpy start Sunday for Tiger Woods when he withdrew from the Honda Classic with what he said was a lower back injury. Woods was 5-over par for the final round -- 12 shots behind Rory McIlroy at the time -- when he shook hands with Luke Guthrie on the 13th green and told him he was done. It was the farthest point at PGA National, and the tournament sent a van to collect Woods and his family. Police kept the media from the parking lot. "He just came over and said, I cant go anymore. It was a pleasure playing with you," said Luke Guthrie, paired with Woods the last two days. "I just said, Take it easy. Feel better. Pretty uneventful." But the speculation over his future figures to be a big buzz leading to the Masters next month. Woods said through spokesman Glenn Greenspan it was a lower back problem that had started Sunday morning as he was warming up. He was to defend his title next week in the Cadillac Championship. "Too early to tell," Woods said in a statement about playing next week at Doral. "Ill get treatment every day to try to calm it down. Just dont know yet. Wait until Thursday and see how it feels." Woods already has played a limited schedule this year -- 10 complete rounds. He was to play twice more before the Masters on April 10-13. Woods said the spasms were similar to what he felt last August at The Barclays, where he dropped to his knees after hitting one shot. Woods finished that tournament in a tie for second, one shot behind Adam Scott. It was the second time in two years that Woods has walked off the course in the middle of the final round. He quit after 11 holes at Doral when he was well out of contention -- and then won Bay Hill two weeks later for his first PGA Tour title since his return from the chaos in his personal life. Guthrie said he could tell early on in the round that something was not right with Woods. "He made a couple of uncharacteristic shots -- the first on 3 kind of was the first one," Guthrie said. "I didnt know if he wasnt feeling the greatest, and it kind of seemed like he might have been protecting -- came up and out of it. I didnt think much of it until maybe 11. I noticed he was bending down gingerly. "He didnt mention it to me," Guthrie said. "Obviously, he wasnt playing the greatest. I wasnt playing the greatest. He was battling out there. Its not like he was throwing in the towel. He was still trying." Woods started the final round seven shots out of the lead and was out of the tournament quickly. He muffed a tough chip in the rough on No. 2, and then took double bogey on the easy par-5 third hole with a drive that found the water hazard left of the sixth green. He bogeyed the fourth from behind the green, and then put his tee shot into the water on No. 6 and had to scramble to save bogey. Woods had said earlier this year in Dubai that he spent the majority of his off-season working on his physical strength, at the expense of neglecting his game. He opened the year by missing the 54-hole cut at Torrey Pines (where he is an eight-time winner), and then tying for 41st in the Dubai Desert Classic. The Honda Classic was his first tournament in a month, and he didnt make it to the finish line. "If youre hurting, youre hurting," Guthrie said. "You dont need to risk injuring yourself even more. Hes had his share of problems with injuries. Theres no reason for him to chance it if hes really hurting." This was the fourth time Woods has withdrawn from a tournament since returning from the chaos in his personal life at the end of 2009. He withdrew from The Players Championship in consecutive years, once in the final round because of a bulging disk, and then after nine holes in 2011 with a leg injury. He left in the final round at Doral in 2012 because of tightness in his Achilles tendon. Two years ago at Doral, Woods was driven in a cart to the parking lot, and NBC Sports showed footage of his Mercedes-Benz driving out of the Miami resort toward his home about an hour north in Jupiter. This time, police blocked the media from entering the players parking lot. Woods was seen getting out of a white passenger van with his mother and other members of his group. It was the second time the No. 1 player in the world walked out in the middle of the Honda Classic. A year ago, McIlroy quit after 26 holes because of what he said was a sore wisdom tooth. He later said the frustration of a poor start to the year got the best of him. By withdrawing in the middle of the round, Woods is ineligible to win the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average for having an incomplete round. Woods has won the award a record nine times. FLIP SAUNDERS (Timberwolves): Im not the least bit surprised that he appointed himself as head coach after his search concluded.Players who join the $180 million lawsuit against the Canadian Hockey League can remain anonymous throughout the course of the case. Ted Charney, a Toronto lawyer who is suing the CHL on behalf of former junior players, said because his case has one named representative plaintiff, others can avoid being publicly identified, protecting their hockey careers. Weve been talking to several players over the past several weeks but none of them wanted to be the representative plaintiff, Charney told TSN in an interview. They dont want to jeopardize their careers by being the face of the lawsuit. On Friday, Sam Berg, the son of former Toronto Maple Leaf player Bill Berg, sued the CHL, the governing body for 60 teams in the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. A statement of claim filed by Berg on behalf of himself and thousands of other players seeks $180 million in outstanding wages, vacation, holiday and overtime pay and employer payroll contributions, according to legal documents obtained by TSN. In a note on his firms website, Charney wrote that he is looking for players who played for major junior teams as far back as October 2008. The beauty of this now is that other players dont ever have to go public, Charney said. Every member of the league is eligible for compensation and its like voting in an election. Their information is completely confidential. They will face no reprisals. The documents filed by Berg show players in the OHL receive $50 to $120 a week in compensation, while players in the QMJHL get $35 to $150, depending on the age of the player. Those aged 16 to 19 get $50 a week in the OHL and $35 a week in the QMJHL. The Toronto Star first reported Bergs lawsuit. While Bergs lawsuit alleges players work as much as 65 hours per week or more, Berg said he was paid $50 a week by the OHLs Niagara IceDogs in 2013.dddddddddddd On average, Sam devoted about six hours a day, seven days a week to providing services to the team, his lawsuit says. When the team traveled, he would devote longer hours, up to 12 hours a day. After he was demoted to Junior B hockey, a shoulder injury ended his career. The OHL allegedly reduced his university scholarship package from four years to half a year, Berg alleges. CHL president David Branch has repeatedly said that players in the CHL are student athletes, and are well compensated, thanks largely to an education program the league has in place that provides some players with university scholarships when they are done playing. The IceDogs coach told The Star that Berg breached his contract when he failed to show up at training camp. Bergs allegations have not been proven in court. Several NHL player agents said the CHL has known for months that a lawsuit like this one might be looming, and sought to change its standard players contract. Instead of describing players as employees or independent contractors, players are now described as student athletes. Charney said its unclear how long the case will take to wind its way through the courts. A class action lawsuit against Maple Leaf Foods over lysteria outbreak was wrapped up in six months, he said, because the company did a mea culpa. I guess it depends whether we have a material disagreement with the CHL over the facts here. Charney said he expected the case would be assigned to a judge and a case conference would be held outlining a prospective schedule before Christmas. cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '

LOS ANGELES -- The Miami Heat played the final minutes the way championship teams are supposed to. The Los Angeles Clippers are still perfecting the art of closing out games against the elite teams. LeBron James had 31 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds, Ray Allen hit a clinching three-pointer in the final minute, and the Heat snapped a five-game road losing streak against the stubborn Clippers with a 116-112 victory on Wednesday night. Allen had 15 points off the bench for the two-time defending NBA champions, who began a six-game road trip that will be interrupted four games in by the All-Star break. Dwyane Wade, one of seven Miami players scoring in double figures, had 14 points and eight assists in his 700th regular-season game. The Heat had lost 10 of their previous 12 road games against the Clippers, and hadnt beaten them at Staples Center since Dec. 9, 2007. Los Angeles, coming off Mondays stinging 116-115 loss at Denver on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by ex-Clipper Randy Foye, got a season-high 43 points and 13 rebounds from Blake Griffin and 31 points from Jamal Crawford. DeAndre Jordan extended his franchise record of consecutive double-digit rebound performances to 29 games with 16 boards and 16 points. The Pacific Division champions are 11-6 since Chris Paul went down with a separated right shoulder on Jan. 3 at Dallas. With Darren Collison and Crawford replacing Paul and J.J. Redick (sore right hip) in the starting lineup, the Clippers bench produced only two points -- a 20-foot jumper by Jared Dudley with 3:17 left in the first quarter -- until Willie Green hit a pair of free throws to pull Los Angeles within 91-84 with 9:51 to play. Allen, who holds the NBA record for career three-pointers, converted a four-point play after Green fouled him behind the arc. That extended Miamis lead to 99-87 with 8:07 remaining. His second three, a rainbow from the left corner, made it 112-107 with 42.4 seconds to go. "Thats when the talent kicks in," James said. "The play was broken down a little bit, but D-Wade made a heck of a play by getting into the paint, and Ray just kept moving into his favourite spot -- one of those corners. D-Wade found him with a great pass, and Ray nailed it." Allen, in his 18th NBA season, played in his 1,271st regular-season game and overtook John Havlicek for 19th place all-time. "Hes a pro and he takes care of himself. Hes in just phenomenal shape, and he can run forever," said Clippers coach Doc Rivers, who had Allen for five seasons with the Celtics. "What impressed me the most when we were in Boston was his professionalism and his ability to make big shots. Ray could go 0 for 20, or 20 for 20, and the next day hed be the first guy in the gym, shooting all of his shots from his exact spots at the exact speed. Ray lives that." The Clippers, who held Miami to just two field goals over the first 7:47 of the fourth quarter, narrowed the gap to 99-95 with a 10-0 run capped by Griffins tip-in with 5:15 left. But James responded with a three-pointer and a layup 53 seconds apart. "Obviously weve had our battles with Doc, being in the Eastern Conference for so long, so we know how well his team is going to be prepared," James said. "I think it was just our mental toughness, especially in the third quarter when they made their run. We just stayed composed and found a way to get a win. We made stops and executed offensively." The Heat opened the third quarter with an 11-5 run that extended their seven-point halftime lead to 73-60. Wade set up an alley-oop dunk by James, and Mario Chalmers hit a three-pointer from in front of the Clippers bench to cap the rally with 8:48 left in the period. Chalmers basket put all of Miamis starters in double-figure scoring. Griffin led all scorers in the first half with 22 points and Crawford added 18, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the second quarter. But the Heat led 62-55 at intermission after shooting 57 per cent. Miamis ball movement was superb from the outset, recording assists on all but one of its first 18 field goals and building a 43-24 lead with 9:44 left in the second quarter. The Heat had 33 assists on 41 field goals overall. "We pride ourselves on moving the ball, and we know that makes it easier for all of us," James said. "We keep everyone in a rhythm when were passing the ball and sharing the ball. Tonight we had some turnovers, including myself. I mean, I was the main culprit (with seven), and Ive got to be more conscious of that and not turn the ball over so much." NOTES: James was called for a reach-in foul against Griffin with 3:17 left in the third quarter, his first of the game, and was assessed a technical foul by referee Bill Kennedy for complaining about it with Miami leading 81-69. ... The Clippers began a five-game homestand that includes four opponents that entered Wednesday with a combined 126-62 record -- Portland and division leaders Miami, Toronto and San Antonio. ... ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – The Blue Jays remain hopeful that Jose Reyess and Casey Janssens stints on the disabled list will be brief and with that, roster decisions are looming in the next 10 to 14 days. “Ideally, we wouldnt carry three,” said general manager Alex Anthopoulos of the clubs current catching situation. “Its really game-to-game right now.” Dioner Navarro is locked in as the starting catcher and Josh Thole broke camp as the back-up specifically because of his history and comfort level with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Erik Kratz, a late-camp cut, ended up beginning the season with the Blue Jays as Janssens roster replacement. If all else was equal, it would have been Kratz in Tholes spot. The prevailing opinion during spring training was that Kratz would be the backup because, while not a batting average or on-base percentage hitter, Kratz offers a power threat that Thole doesnt. Kratz hit 18 home runs in 375 at-bats playing behind Carlos Ruiz in Philadelphia over the last two seasons. In a pinch-hit at-bat on opening day, his first at-bat as a Blue Jay, Kratz launched a two-run home run over the centre field fence. Thole hit .175/.256/.242 for a .497 OPS last season. A left-handed bat, his insertion into the line-up on days when Dickey lines up against the divisions top left-handers like David Price, CC Sabathia and Jon Lester, creates a significant hole at the bottom of the order. The back-up catcher likely will have to play more this season – Navarro hasnt appeared in more than 89 games since 2009. One wonders if theres wisdom in tying another roster spot to Dickey, one pitcher who throws a specific pitch. “The thing is Josh has had some offensive success,” said Anthopoulos. “I know he didnt have it last year and the second half of the year with the Mets in 2012 but in the past, if you look at it, hes been a .700 OPS guy, he can draw some walks, low strikeout rate, he can put the ball in play and grind out some at-bats.” Anthopoulos cautions against jumping to conclusions, reminding that rosters can be changed in a heartbeat. The Blue Jays could play an 18-inning game, necessitating the recall of a reliever in support of a tired bullpen; somebody else could get hurt. There are a number of variables, a number of possibilities. “Obviously, Josh was the guy who made the team out of spring,” said Anthopoulos. “That hasnt changed at all and well see as the year goes along.” HAPPS ROLE J.A. Happ threw a light side session on Wednesday as he works his way back from a back problem. Hes eligible to come off the disabled list on April 13 and, at the moment, there isnt a spot for Happ in the starting rotation. Anthopoulos hasnt yet approached Happ about being a reliever. “Well deal with all that,” said Anthopoulos. “Hopefully, like anything, we have five starters that are rolling and theyre winning all their games and we have too many starters. Thatd be a great problem to have. Id sign up for that right now. You deal with those things as they come. Everyday something else can happen, in the next 10 days, two weeks. You cant plan that far ahead.” ANTHOPOULOS ISNT SHOPPING FOR INFIELDER A self-explanatory headline. Anthopoulos isnt looking to swing a deal for a middle infielder to support the club while Reyes is out. “We expect Jose to be back somewhat soon,” said Anthopoulos. Nick Kyrgios, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Simona Halep and Heather Watson are all in action on day one of the French Open at Roland Garros on Sunday. Japanese ace Nishikori is the leading male player in action as the second Grand Slam of the year gets underway and the fifth seed will have to be at his best to see off experienced Italian Simone Bolelli.Bolelli may be regarded more as a doubles specialist these days, indeed he won the Australian Open in 2015 with Fabio Fognini, but he has twice taken Nishikori to five sets and is at home on the clay courts. Nishikori, however, pushed Novak Djokovic to the limit in their Rome semi-final last week and has two semi-finals and a final under his belt on the European clay-court swing this seasonKyrgios, who has shown a new-found sense of maturity to claim his first ATP title this season, and a Masters-best semi-final run at the Miami Open, is up against Italys Marco Cecchinato. Nick Kyrgios can continue an excellent 2016 with a strong run at Roland Garros And home fans will have plenty to look forward to with Jeremy Chardy, seeded 30th, in action against Leonardo Mayer of Argentina and the enigmatic Benoit Paire taking on Radu Albot of Moldova.Fourth seed Garbine Muguruza heads the list of women in action on the opening day. She should have little trouble against Slovakias Anna Schmiedlova while sixth seed Halep takes on Japans Nao Hibino.Petra Kvitova will start the day on Philippe-Chartrier, the 10th seed takes on Danko Kovinic, and Sloane Stephens meets Russias Maragarita Gasparyan. Philippe-Chatrier Court - Order of Play Danka Kovinic v Petra Kvitova (10) Kei Nishikori (5) v Simone Bolelli Anna Schmiedova v Garbine Muguruza (4) Jeremy Chardy (30) v Leonardo Mayer One to Watch Milos Raonic is one of the outsiders who could make the breakthrough John Isner v John Millman is likely to be a contender and in-form Jack Sock will not be underestimating Dutchman Robin Haase, but in the mens event we are going for Milos Raonic against Janko Tipsarevic.Raonic was beaten by Kyrgios in Rome but has performed well at most of the seasons big events, adding an Indian Wells final to his appearance in the last four at the Australian Open. Outsiders assessed The surprise names to keep in mind Sky Sports Leif Shiras has tipped the big-serving Canadian as the next new winner of a Grand Slam, and in Tipsarevic he has an ideal opening opponent. The Serb has been around long enough to provide a tough test but Raonic has won all four meetings and has the class to come through. Womens First Round Draw Deatils on the opening matches at Roland Garros Svetlana Kuznetsova is a two-time Grand Slam champion, winning at Roland Garros in 2009, but the 13th seed has a tough test against Yaroslava Shvedova, whose best singles performances have come in Paris, twice reaching the quarter-finals.Those seeking something entertaining on the outside courts should look out for Germanys Dustin Brown, a past Wimbledon conqueror of Rafael Nadal, who takes on Israels Dudi Sela on Court No 11 in what should make for a crowd-pleasing clash. Suzanne-Lenglen Court - Order of Play Radu Albot v Benoit Paire (19) Vitalia Diatchenko v Lucie Safarova (11) Milos Raonic (8) v Janko Tipsarevic Simona Halep (6) v Nao Hibino Surprise in Store?Upsets are difficult to predict in the opening round in Paris, mainly because of clays capacity to throw up many a surprise, but should he find the form we know he is capable of, Grigor Dimitrov could prove too strong for Viktor Troicki. Bulgarias Grigor Dimitrov can cause a shock on day one Dimitrovs standards have dropped over the last couple of years and he has bounced around coaches, but a liking for the big events could see him cause a stir at Roland Garros and he can start by seeing off 22nd seed Troicki.Theyve already met twice this year and its one win apiece. In the womens event both Madison Brengle and Elena Vesnina are unseeded but American Brengle could well overcome the 20-place difference in the rankings and see off the Russian, whose focus is likely to be on a second womens doubles title in Paris.  Murrays Roland Garros record A look at how the British number one has fared in Paris Brit WatchTwo Brits are in action and, whisper it, there are a couple of decent chances for victory - Kyle Edmund takes on Georgias Nikoloz Basilashvili out on Court No 6 and on Court No 3 Heather Watson takes on American Nicole Gibbs.Edmund is ranked at No 84 in the world and comes into the tournament after claiming the Challenger title in Rome, his second title of the year at that level. Kyle Edmund has a good chance of a first round win in Paris The 21-year-old has also racked up wins against Martin Klizan, Radek Stepanek, Jiri Vesely and Lukas Rosol this season and will fancy his chances of seeing off world No 105 Basilashvili, whose main tournament action this year has been on the Challenger circuit.Watson takes on on Gibbs, who at 72 is ranked some 18 places below the British No 2, who made a decent run to the last 32 in Rome last week.In Case You Missed ItWith the top mens seeds not in action on day one, they are still likely to attract many of the headlines with Amelie Mauresmo confirming her partnership with Andy Murray ended, at least in part, because of his on-court behaviour. He couldnt have done much better once it started. The lefty struck out a career-high 15, allowing one hit over eight scoreless innings and pitching the Boston Red Sox over the Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Saturday. "Its probably the worst cutter Ive thrown in a bullpen in a long time, but I dont take much stock in my bullpens anymore," Lester said. "Youre down there to get loose. I think the biggest thing for me is just getting on the mound and getting that adrenaline going." He faced 26 batters and just nine hit the ball in fair territory. The only As to reach base against him were Craig Gentry on a leadoff single in the third and Derek Norris on walks to start the fifth and eighth. "Just the combination of power and command was impressive," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He was locked in seemingly from the first pitch." Lester (3-4) got plenty of support on a grand slam by Jonny Gomes and solo homers by David Ortiz and David Ross in Bostons second straight win after losing a day-night doubleheader to Tampa Bay on Thursday. But Oakland scored three runs off Chris Capuano in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate before Koji Uehara struck out Alberto Callaspo and retired Brandon Moss on a fly to right, securing his seventh save in seven opportunities. "I knew we had it the whole way," Lester said. "Weve got the best closer in baseball out there." The only hit off Lester was Gentrys bloop single in the third over the head of second baseman Dustin Pedroia. "Thats the best performance Ive seen him have," Oaklands Nick Punto said. Lester rebounded from taking the loss in his previous two games by striking out nine of his first 13 batters. His previous strikeout best was 13 on July 24, 2010, in a 5-1 loss at Seattle. "He looked pretty cozy out there," Gomes said. Lester, who threw a no-hitter on May 19, 2008 against Kansas City, struck out every hitter in the Oakland lineup, fanning Josh Reddick three times and Punto, Callaspo, Coco Crisp aand Josh Donaldson twice each.dddddddddddd Gomes hit the fifth slam of his career one day after Pedroia hit one. Tommy Milone (0-3) allowed Gomes homer after Pedroia walked, Xander Bogaerts singled and Ortiz walked. "It always seems that every time you walk somebody they have a tendency of scoring," Milone said, "so it just took that one big hit from Gomes to set the tone." Milone struck out the next four batters but ran into trouble again in the third when Ortiz led off with his sixth homer of the year. Ross started the fourth with his third homer. Lester threw 119 pitches before being replaced by Capuano to start the ninth. In his previous two starts, Lester threw 118 pitches in a 7-2 loss to the New York Yankees on April 22 and 122 in a 4-1 loss at Toronto last Sunday. Punto started the ninth with a double and took third on a single by Crisp. Both scored when Jed Lowrie doubled and left fielder Gomes threw wildly to the plate for an error. After Donaldson was hit by a pitch, Uehara walked Yoenis Cespedes. Norris hit into a forceout at home, but catcher Ross throw to first went wild, allowing a run to score before Uehara ended the threat. "Its easy to just cash it in after youve struck out 15 times in eight innings and hadnt had too many good swings and youre frustrated," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said, "and then to get those kind of at-bats in the ninth inning, its good." NOTES: Capuano hadnt allowed a run in his other 12 outings this season. ... Pedroia has reached base 35 times in his last 17 games. ... TAMPA, Fla. -- The Toronto Maple Leafs are tightening the race for second place in the Atlantic Division. Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves and the Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 on Thursday night. The second-place Lightning have a one-point lead over Toronto and Montreal, which beat Vancouver 5-2. "The last week and a half (has been tough)," said Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper, whose team has lost four of five. "I dont mind where we are in the standings as of today. We kind of built a bulge in the standings, point-wise, and now weve lost some of it. But in saying that, I rather be where we are right now than where some other teams are." Mason Raymond, Jay McClement, James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak scored for Toronto, which was coming of a 4-1 loss Tuesday night at Florida. "We needed a response from our effort the other night, and we got it tonight," Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. "If you dont have goaltending, you dont have a starting point in the NHL. Were not any different than any other hockey club. The goaltender is your last line of defence, and our guys have given us a chance for a better part of this year." The Maple Leafs are 10-2-1 over their last 13 games. "We want to finish strong before the (Olympic) break with as many points as possible," Bernier said. Bernier had a number of strong saves early when Tampa Bay dominated the first half of the first period, and he made a glove save on J.T. Brown during the second. "It didnt look like we had it early, and once again Bernie was ready to play and kept us in it," McClement said. "Then we were able to get our legs." Ondrej Palat had the lone goal for Tampa Bay. Lightning goalie Ben Bishop left after two periods with an upper-body injury and was replaced by Cedrick Desjardins, and centre Valtteri Filppula also left due to a lower-body injury. Desjardins is filling in for backup Anders Lindback, who is sidelined by a lower-body injury. Both Bishop and Filppula will be evaluated Friday. McClement made it 2-0 on an in-close backhander that eluded Desjardins at 2:19 of the third. After Desjardins make a glove save a couple of minutes later on Troy Bodies breakaway shot, the Maple Leafs turned an errant pass by the Lightning into a 3-0 advantage on van Riemsdyks point-blank goal at 8:10. Bozak added an empty-net goal with 2:52 to play. Palat ended Berniers shutout bid and cut Tampa Bays deficit to 3-1 at 10:28 of the third. There was a scrum between the teams with 1:42 remaining after a Toronto defender made contact with Brown, who ended up colliding with Bernier. Five players received penalties on the play. Raymond opened the scoring 7:57 into the second when he skated in alone from the left wing boards and lifted a backhander over Bishop. Bishop kept the Lightning within a goal when he stopped a shot during a breakaway by Bozak with 4 minutes left in the second. The Maple Leafs, despite allowing eight of the first nine shots, outshot Tampa Bay 12-9 during a scoreless first period.
